Mellon Postdoctoral Fellow

About

I completed a D.Phil at the University of Oxford in 2010, under the supervision of Dr Manuele Gragnolati, and am now a Mellon Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of French and Italian at Dartmouth, where I teach courses on medieval and modern Italian literature. My research so far has focused on Dante and medieval culture, with a particular emphasis on the author’s relationship to the Romance lyric tradition, discourses of love and desire, and intertextuality.

I am the co-editor of the volumes Desire in Dante and the Middle Ages (Oxford: Legenda, 2012) and Dante in Oxford: The Paget Toynbee Lectures (Oxford: Legenda, 2011) and am currently revising my doctoral thesis for publication as a book entitled Dante’s Lyric Redemption (under review at Oxford University Press).

My published essays include: ‘Dante’s Ambivalence towards the Lustful’, in Dante and the Seven Deadly Sins (Dublin: Four Courts Press, forthcoming); ‘Dido, Aeneas, and the Evolution of Dante‘s Poetics‘, Dante Studies, 129 (2011); ‘Desire, Subjectivity, and Lyric Poetry in Dante's Convivio and Commedia‘, in Desire in Dante and the Middle Ages (op. cit.); ‘“Una modesta Divina Commedia”: Dante as anti-model in Cesare Pavese’s La luna e i falò’, in Metamorphosing Dante: Appropriations, Manipulations and Rewritings in the Twentieth and Twenty-First Centuries (Berlin and Vienna: Turia und Kant, 2011); and ‘Redefining the “matera amorosa”: Dante’s Vita nova and Guittone’s (anti-)courtly “canzoniere”’, The Italianist, 29 (2009). I have also published a number of reviews in British, American, and Italian literary journals.
